Why Manufacturers Get Asked for PE-Stamped Submittals
If you make or supply building products such as wall protection, railings, canopies, storefronts, signage, stairs, cladding, or equipment supports, you have probably seen this line in a project spec: "Submit calculations signed and sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed in the state where the project is located." The architect or engineer of record (EOR) wants proof that your product, and the way it is attached, can carry the required loads on that specific project.
For many manufacturers this request shows up on project after project, often with a short deadline. Without a reliable engineering partner, submittals stall, orders sit, and installs slip.
What a Typical Stamped Submittal Package Includes
- Project-specific calculations showing the product and its anchorage meet the loads in the project documents, such as wind, seismic, impact, or guard loads
- Anchorage and attachment design to the actual substrate on the job: concrete, steel, wood, or stud walls
- Shop or installation drawings with dimensions, materials, fasteners, and details
- CAD or BIM files (AutoCAD, Revit families) when the design team requests them for coordination
- A PE seal from an engineer licensed in the project state
The EOR reviews the package for conformance with the design intent. They do not design your product for you, which is why the request comes to you.
Common Products That Need Delegated Engineering
- Guardrails, handrails, and glass railings (guard and handrail loads)
- Wall protection, corner guards, and wall panels in high-traffic or impact areas
- Canopies, awnings, and sunshades (wind and snow loads)
- Storefront, curtain wall, and window systems (wind loads and anchorage)
- Signs and sign structures
- Rooftop equipment supports and screens
- Miscellaneous metals such as ladders, stairs, and platforms
Why a Generic Product Report Is Often Not Enough
Many manufacturers have test reports or general product data. Those are useful, but plan reviewers and EORs often want calculations tied to the actual project: the specific wind exposure, the building height, the substrate, the spacing, and the code edition the jurisdiction has adopted. A sealed, project-specific package answers those questions directly and reduces back-and-forth.
The State License Problem
A PE seal is only valid in states where the engineer is licensed. If you ship nationally, you may need sealed calculations in Texas this week, Florida next week, and California after that. Working with a firm that holds licenses in the states you sell into keeps you from searching for a new engineer every time a spec asks for a stamp.
How to Speed Up Your Submittals
- Standardize your details. Typical anchorage details and product data that an engineer has already reviewed make each project faster.
- Collect the project inputs up front: project address, building height, wind and seismic criteria from the structural drawings, substrate type, and the spec section.
- Send the spec section and any EOR comments along with your drawings.
- Ask for CAD or BIM files in the same order, so the design team gets everything in one submittal.
- Keep one engineering partner who already knows your product line.
What Does It Cost?
Cost depends on the product, the number of conditions to check, whether CAD or BIM files are needed, and how much of the work can reuse previously reviewed details. Repeat work on a known product line is usually faster and less expensive than a first project. Ask for a written quote per project, or a standing arrangement if you submit often.
